Filmed entirely in Amsterdam last year, it stars Marc Warren ( Beecham House, Hustle) as Piet Van der Valk. Now the character returns in Van der Valk, a 3 x 90-minute series produced by Company Pictures ( Agatha Raisin) for ITV. Some novels were adapted in the 1990s by BBC Radio 4. Composed by Jack Trombey (2) and played by the Simon Park Orchestra, it became #1 in the UK charts in 1973. Eye Level, its theme music, is remembered too. The best remembered version is the Thames Television series Van der Valk (1972-1973, 1977, 1991-1992), with Barry Foster. Bryan Marshall played the role in Because of the Cats/ Niet voor de poezen, a Dutch-Belgian film released in 1973. Frank Finlay starred in three German/French TV movies between 19 (1). Called the "Dutch Maigret", Piet Van der Valk was first portrayed on-screen by German actor Wolfgang Kieling in the British film Amsterdam Affair (1968). Freeling, who spent most of his life in continental Europe, was an admirer of Belgian author Georges Simenon. Married to a French woman named Arlette, the Commissaris appeared in 11 books from 1962 to 1989. Created by English novelist Nicolas Freeling (1927-2003), Simon "Piet" Van der Valk is a cynical and intuitive Amsterdam police commissioner.

The book seemed to have the makings of a best-seller, but after selling well for a few weeks, it quietly disappeared. Upon its publication, various critics predicted wide sales, and the Book-of-the-Month Club adopted it as its main selection for June of 1935. In April of 1934 Cobb, deciding that he was tired of his desk job at an advertising agency, sat down to write a novel in August he completed Paths of Glory. 2 While Kubrick and writers Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson have changed the focus and toned down some of his narrative’s brutality, Cobb yet remains the ultimate source of the film’s drama and of most of its ideas. However, the record of commentary on this film points up a central weakness in the “auteur” theory that credits him with primary responsibility for the film’s content 1: in discussions of what is generally referred to as “Kubrick’s Paths of Glory,” no mention is made of Humphrey Cobb’s novel, from which is derived much of the film’s power, as well as its basic story. Stanley Kubrick, who directed the film of Paths of Glory, is one of the most respected of contemporary directors, and he is certainly deserving of the praise showered on him by critics and film scholars. They're all condemned criminals, but they've been offered pardons and rewards if they can successfully complete a mission to Anuket City, to find a wayto defeat the Clockwork Boys, giant centaur-like creatures apparently made out of machine parts, who are ravaging the countryside and threatening the kingdom that, however questionable their characters, our three criminals are subjects of. Then he got careless and a demon possessed him,and it was exorcised, but not until after he'd killed eight temple nuns. In that capacity, he killed or exorcised, depending on circumstances, demons who had possessed people or animals. Slate is a forger and thief, Brenner an assassin, Sir Caliban a former knight-champion of the Dreaming God. Obviously, I've read a lot of books in 54 years! Shoghi Effendi's exposition of the Teachings, his unique realization of the ultimate aim and purpose of Bahá’u’lláh's Revelation, are no static commentary upon a sacred text, but the very essence of world statesmanship evoked in the hour of man's direst need. AugThe World Order of Bah’u’llh: Selected Letters, a compilation of letters written by Shoghi Effendi, identify the essential character and distinguishing features of the Bah’ Faith in contrast to other political and religious systems. In reading this volume one may perceive the significance of the new dimension which Bahá’u’lláh gave to religion in this era: the supremacy of Divine Law in civilization, fulfilling that supremacy which in previous Dispensations relgion had exercised over individual souls. These letters are a powerful gathering of instruction, inspiration, and prophecy regarding living within the Administrative Order of the Baha'i Faith. The vital distinction between the Bahá’í community and the sects and congregations of former religions had already been made apparent at the time of their writing, but this collection establishes the Bahá’í Administrative Order as the nucleus and pattern of the world civilization emerging under divine inspiration at this focal point in human history. Shoghi Effendi was considered the Guardian of the Baha'i Faith, and he was the great-grandson of the Prophet/Founder of the Baha'i Faith, Baha'u'llah. This collection of letters by Shoghi Effendi unfold a clear vision of the relation between the Bahá’í community and the entire process of social evolution under the Dispensation of Baha'u'llah. In 1780, he married Elizabeth Schuyler, the daughter of a wealthy and influential New York landowner and military officer. Hamilton’s writing prowess and military skills helped him thrive as Washington’s aide-de-camp, and built his reputation in Revolution-era society. By 1777, he had captured the attention of the army’s commander-in-chief, General George Washington, who gave him a position on his staff. When the Revolutionary War began, he was commissioned to lead an artillery company in the Continental Army and fought bravely in the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, among others. While studying at King’s College in New York (now Columbia University), Hamilton got involved in the colonial cause, writing pamphlets like “A Full Vindication of the Measures of Congress,” in which he defended the First Continental Congress’s proposal to embargo trade with Britain. |
